In the near recent, everyone is talking about Earth Hour 2009 organized by WWF (World Widelife Fund). This global event is asking households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on global warming.
Turning off ligths for 1 hour, there is a reduction of 24.86 tons of carbon dioxide(CO2) — about the amount produced by 48,000 cars on the road.
But, do you really know this too?
“If all the world’s 1 billion PC’s were powered down for just one night – it would save enough energy to light up New York City’s Empire State Building – inside and out – for more than 30 years”
Honestly, I never think much about it. I always straight to bed and leave my laptop running overnight. I think most people will do so, leaving their computers to download songs and movies etc.
But all the power wasted while computers are running idle overnight adds up, and one study has finally tried to measure it. The report: U.S. organizations wasted $2.8 billion by leaving their computers on at night, emitting about 20 million tons of carbon dioxide — roughly the equivalent of 4 million cars. Can you imagine that?
Of course, hopefully this post will create your awareness. So even though it’s my little laptop, eats up only about a little amount of power overnight, I’ll shut it down after hours after all.
What about you?Share this to your friends and communities.
“The primary reason we do it is because we want people to think, even if it is for an hour, what they can do to lower their carbon footprint, and ideally take that beyond the hour,” Earth Hour executive director Andy Ridley told reporters at the Syned Bondi Beach.
Did you turn off your lights for Earth Hour at 8.30 p.m. local time, Saturday, 28th March 2009?
